Radiofrequency Ablation

What is radiofrequency ablation?

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive pain management technique often used to relieve pain in the back, neck, and joints. Dr. Sparks commonly uses RFA to treat patients suffering from arthritis.

What happens during a radiofrequency ablation procedure?

During your initial consultation, Dr. Sparks answers any questions you may have about the treatment. She walks you through the process and explains how RFA fits into your overall treatment plan.

To perform the radiofrequency ablation, Dr. Sparks administers a local anesthetic, which eliminates your discomfort during the procedure. She then uses X-ray imaging to help her guide a fine needle to the precise nerves responsible for your pain.

Dr. Sparks keeps the needle a safe distance from other muscles, to make sure there is no damage to surrounding areas. The needle emits radiofrequency waves, which create a heat lesion on the nerve, blocking pain signal paths. Because the nerve has been blocked from sending a pain signal to the brain, you effectively will not feel any pain.

What can I expect after radiofrequency ablation?

Following the procedure, Dr. Sparks suggests that you avoid strenuous physical activity for the next few days, and you shouldn’t drive for the next 24 hours. She will go over any additional restrictions with you before your procedure.

You may have some pain in the week after treatment that ultimately subsides to provide permanent or semi-permanent pain relief.

Is radiofrequency ablation safe?

Dr. Sparks has been using RFA to relieve pain for years to treat pain in the joints, neck, and back. Radiofrequency ablation is safe and pain-free, although you may feel a slight tingling sensation during the procedure.

As with any medical treatment, there are minimal risks, but Dr. Sparks will evaluate your condition, symptoms, and family medical history to determine whether the procedure is right for you.
